The monkey atop the horse represents the motif 'Ma Sang Bong Hu (馬上封侯),' which means 'to be immediately (Ma Sang) appointed as a Marquis (Hou).' In Chinese, 'Ma Sang' (on a horse) is a homophone for 'immediately,' and 'Hou' (monkey) is a homophone for 'Marquis,' symbolizing a wish for rapid promotion and a rise in status.
